The role of a student representative
Student Representatives are elected each year to be the voice of the study body and at the School of Clinical Medicine there are two main types of representatives:
School student representatives
Sit on several School-level committee meetings, including Faculty Board and Council. Their role is to ensure that student views are taken into account at the higher strategic level.
Department/Faculty student representatives
Represent students at subject-level meetings. Their role is to ensure that student views are considered when making decisions about a specific course and/or department.
Support for student representatives
All student reps are offered training sessions throughout the year via the University of Cambridge Student Union, the aim of this training is to provide students with a transferable skillset which will support them in their representative role e.g. writing reports for committee meetings.
The School of Clinical Medicine also provides student representatives with support during their time in the post, this support will be either come via the Department or Clinical School’s Postgraduate Team. For example, the School-level student representatives are offered a detailed Handbook which provides guidance for their first few months in post.
